Join Richard McGaugh May 21st for a three mile walk around Picture Canyon. After the Picture Canyon walk, we will break for lunch and then take a short drive and visit the Elden Pueblo.
Picture Canyon Natural and Cultural Preserve offers visitors an opportunity to view Northern Sinagua Petroglyphs and a walk along the Rio De Flag. The Rio De Flag was a highly used resource for the Northern Sinagua.
In 2014-2015, the Museum of Northern Arizona published its beautiful Plateau magazine featuring Picture Canyon-People, Petroglyphs and Place, including details about the ecology, archaeology, and history of the Preserve.
The City of Flagstaff acquired the 478-acre Preserve from the Arizona State Land Department in 2012 with funding from the 2004 voter-approved Open Space bond and a Growing Smarter Grant from Arizona State Parks. The acquisition of Picture Canyon provides a natural place for members of the Flagstaff community to learn about ecology, geology, and archaeology, while participating in outdoor recreation.

Richard is from a fourth-generation Verde Valley family and has spent his time studying and exploring Central and Northern Arizona. Richard volunteers as a “Verde Valley Archaeology Center Docent”, He is a “VIP Interpretative Ranger” at Walnut Canyon National Monument and Wupatki/ Sunset Crater National Monuments, and a Museum of Northern Arizona “Docent”
