Members Hike to Picture Canyon Natural and Cultural Preserve
Hiking The Picture Canyon Loop Trail
Monday, May the 4th at 10:00am
$30 per person
Limit of 12 Participants
Conducted by Richard McGaugh and Monica Buckle
Join us in Flagstaff at Picture Canyon Natural and Cultural Preserve where one of the highlights of the trail is a petroglyph site featuring dozens of intricate rock carvings adorning the basalt canyon walls. These petroglyphs depict animals, people, and geometric designs, thought to have held spiritual or ceremonial significance for the Sinagua people.
It is an important archaeological and ecological site. Its name comes from the array of petroglyphs—ancient rock carvings—created by the Northern Sinagua people, who lived in the region between AD 700 and 1400.
In addition to its rich history, Picture Canyon is known for its vibrant natural environment. The preserve features a lush riparian corridor along the Rio de Flag, one of the few perennial streams in the Flagstaff area. This ecosystem supports a wide variety of wildlife, making it a popular spot for birdwatching and nature observation.
We will meet at 9:45am at the Trailhead since the hike starts promptly at 10:00am. The Picture Canyon Loop Trail is a 2.8-mile loop that takes you through the heart of the preserve. Participants must be comfortable walking 2.8-miles roundtrip and at 7,000 feet in elevation. The trail is well-marked and offers a moderate hike suitable for all skill levels. Please bring all your hiking accessories, water, snacks, sun protection, sturdy shoes and if desired walking sticks.
After the hike join us for a group lunch at the nearby Cracker Barrel Restaurant. Please note, transportation is not provided and lunch is a separate expense.
