Join VVAC for an immersive experience of Meteor Crater. Over 50,000 years ago space and earth came together when a huge iron-nickel meteorite, approximately 150 feet wide and weighing several hundred thousand tons, impacted an area outside of Flagstaff, Arizona. The result of this impact created the giant bowl-shaped cavity we call Meteor Crater, which measures 550 feet deep and almost a mile wide. In 1968, Meteor Crater was designated a Natural Landmark by the Department of the Interior.

Arrive at 9:40am and meet at the Meteor Crater Visitor Center. At 10:00am we will watch a short documentary, IMPACT: THE MYSTERY OF METEOR CRATER which covers the history and geology of this impact and describes how it was eventually proven to be a meteorite impact site through the work of Daniel M. Barringer.

After the film, we will depart for a private guided walking tour of the crater’s rim. Learn about the impact processes that played a prominent role in the development of our planets, satellites, asteroids, and comets. The geologic and planetary records are clear, collisions ranging in size from microscopic to gigantic events have occurred since the beginning of the solar system and this is your chance to walk on the rim of the best-preserved meteorite impact site on earth. It’s an easy 40-minute hike and will give a great perspective on how the earth was forever changed after impact.

Following the rim tour, we will have an exclusive VIP experience visiting the old homestead at the site. It is a ½ mile walk to the old homestead and along the journey there is Ancestral Puebloan rock art to view. This experience is not available to the general public and has been provided especially for VVAC.

After a day at Meteor Crater, we will then depart for a late lunch at Arrows Sports Bar located at Twin Arrows Navajo Casino Resort. Please note, lunch is a separate expense and transportation to and from Meteor Crater and Twin Arrows is not provided.
